FLEETSAFE CORPORATION Fleet Import and Management THE CHALLENGE Fleetsafe Corporation, the leading “How’s My Driving?” vehicle tracking firm, wanted to allow its customers to manage their fleet information without have to route their requests through the expensive data entry department. Additionally, Fleetsafe wanted its employees to have the capability to bulk import extremely large fleets quickly using Excel. This would eliminate the huge temporary staff that they often employed to meet demanding time constraints. INTERDEV'S SOLUTION Interdev utilized object orientated techniques, ASP, SQL, JavaScript, the Excel object, and stored procedure calls to develop an intuitive user design. figure 1 The start page automatically populates all managed fleets in an option box. The authorized user selects the company, submits the query, and is taken to the fleet management page (figure 1). The user has two choices. The user may import using Excel or may choose to manage the entire fleet online. The Excel option allows a Fleetsafe employee to either replace an existing fleet with all new fleet information or to add to the existing fleet. The program notifies the user if there are improper import types and bolds the errors to aid in troubleshooting. The user is kept informed at all steps and is notified when the import is complete.   figure 2 The online option (Figure 2) allows the customer to search by Decal Number, Vehicle Number, or Plate Number. The user has the ability to update, add, or delete information. The page is self posting, therefore the majority of the code is re-usable. The code contains client side validation which checks for legitimate values. It populates existing values during updates. The code uses hover help, prompts users if they are sure they want to delete, and intuitively changes from an update form to an add form after a change has been submitted. A button, tied to a Javascript function, displays decal mailing information in a pop-up window when clicked. THE RESULTS Fleetsafe may now begin to reduce expensive data entry overhead or may shift those employees to more value added tasks. Realizing the potential 897%+ ROI per year, Chief Operating Officer, Hadley Benton states, “I can’t tell you the untold benefits this import is having on our operations.”
